Here’s a cozy, classic “Grandma’s Cold-Weather Favorite” recipe — the kind that warms you up from the inside out 🤍
Grandma’s Chicken & Dumplings
Ingredients
For the soup
- 1 whole chicken (or 3–4 lb chicken pieces)
- 8 cups water or chicken broth
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 celery stalks, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp poultry seasoning (optional)
For the dumplings
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter
Instructions
- Cook the chicken
Place chicken in a large pot with water/broth, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, salt, and pepper.
Simmer gently for about 45–60 minutes, until chicken is tender. - Shred the chicken
Remove chicken, let cool slightly, then shred meat and discard bones/skin.
Return shredded chicken to the pot. - Make the dumplings
In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
Stir in milk and melted butter just until combined. - Add dumplings
Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough into the gently boiling soup. - Simmer
Cover and cook for 15 minutes, then uncover and cook another 5 minutes.
(Don’t stir too much or the dumplings can break.) - Taste & serve
Adjust seasoning and serve hot.
Grandma’s Tips
- Low and slow makes the best flavor.
- If you like thicker broth, mash a few dumplings against the side of the pot.
- Even better the next day ❄️
